NEW YORK | MUJI, A LITTLE TASTE OF JAPANESE PERFECTION IN NYC

Shopping bag rain coat = a little piece of Japanese perfection in customer service and attention to detail…in NYC. Luckily the Japanese brand MUJI upholds it’s Japanese standards even abroad.

A little wasteful, but still worth it. When you are used to this Japanese style service it’s hard to live without it. (My all time favorite is the little piece of tape to close the bag. That is key!! 😉

NEW YORK | NIKE SHOE TRIAL

What is the most frustrating thing about buying new running shoes? To me, not being able to test them.

Nike is not the shoe of choice for most hard core runners, however, allowing runners to take a pair for a run will surely have its positive effects. Avid runners tend to purchase shoes based on feel, not looks, and typically become loyal to one brand. When a runner is in the “loyal stage”, the only way to entice them to switch brands is trough trial.

I’m quite shocked that competitor brands don’t do this as much.

To me this is the most basic and effective promotion such brands can do to grab runners from competitors. Ultimately, it’s all about the experience.

USA | RECESSION CONSEQUENCES

I’ve now been back in the US for a little over a month and can’t help but notice the results of the recession. NY was clearly hit in the bulls eye …. Unfortunately the small players (on the retail side) are the ones that pay the biggest consequences.
It is sad to walk down the main streets in Brooklyn or major avenues in Manhattan and see innumerable signs screaming “for rent”, “out of business”, etc. Some of my favorite spots in town did not survive.

Asia was surely not hit as hard, at least judging purely from retail and real estate.

For those of you who are not here in NY, this is a normal scene on the busy streets of the city.

NEW YORK | 12 SECONDS OF FAME BILLBOARD

American Eagle Outfitters has quite a striking billboard in the middle of Times Sq.
You can sms your picture “to it” and it will appear on it.

Nothing so special about the picture posting…. just amazing resolution and impact!

NEW YORK | POSTER BOY

In NY “Poster Boy” has been “re-designing” posters around the city with a knife blade. For protest? For fun? For art? Whatever the purpose, he is now a legend. Just by doing something different and with extreme visibility.

This is a great tactic for protest. Using art as a means of protesing

His messages are witty and direct. For example taking the “Do not lean on the door” poster and making it  “do not lean on the poor”.

But as always the NYPD was effective and arrested, Henry Matyjewicz, who was later released on bail paid by an art gallery (the gallery where he was when arrested) …..but word on the street is that Henry might not even be the real poster boy.

So who is “Poster Boy”??
